January began with a bang in Australia. The Australian bushfires killed millions of animals and burned down thousands of hectars of land. This was termed as black summer.

On January 3rd American President Trump ordered strikes in Iraq. A U.S. drone strike at Baghdad International Airport kills Iranian general Qasem Soleimani and Iraqi paramilitary leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. Iran accidentally shot down a civilian plane killing 56 people onboard.

American president signed new NAFTA. A trade agreement between USA Mexico and Canada.

The United Kingdom and Gibraltar formally withdraw from the European Union, beginning an 11-month transition period.

India

On 5 January 2020, more than 50 masked people armed with rods, sticks and acid attacked the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, and injured more than 39 students and teachers.

The Shaheen Bagh protest was a sit-in peaceful protest, led by women, that began in response to the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in both houses of the Parliament of India on 11 December 2019 and the ensuing police intervention against students at Jamia Millia Islamia who were opposing the Amendment. Protesters agitated not only against the citizenship issues of the CAA, National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR), but also against police brutality, unemployment, poverty and for women's safety.  These were mostly driven by left leaning, communist and Islamist organizations.
