फ्रांस में सामाजिक और राजनीतिक उथल-पुथल के लिए फ्रांसीसी क्रांति (1789-99) को याद किया जाता है। यह फ्रेंच और यूरोपियन इतिहास की सबसे बड़ी घटना थी। 1789 में फ्रांसीसी क्रांति की शुरुआत हुई। फ्रांस के लोग राजशाही से परेशान होकर सडकों पर उतर आए। भीड़ ने पेरिस शहर का पूरा नियंत्रण अपने हाथ में ले लिया। उग्र लोगों ने बड़े लोगों (सामंतों और शासकों) को किले में बंद कर दिया और उनके सिर कलम कर दिए।
